The Azores, a stunning Portuguese archipelago in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, has become one of the most sought-after destinations for travelers seeking nature, culture, and tranquility. Reaching these islands from North America is easier than ever, thanks to several direct flight options and expanding airline routes. (Please keep in mind that the airline flights & schedules can change or cancel at any time, best to always check the airline's) website for updates).
Direct Flights from North America to the Azores
The main international gateway to the Azores is João Paulo II Airport (PDL) on São Miguel Island, located in the city of Ponta Delgada. This airport handles most transatlantic flights and serves as the hub for connecting to the other eight islands. There are also some direct flights into the island of Terceira.
Direct Flights to Ponta Delgada (PDL) & (TER)
Departure City (Airport Code) | Airline(s) | **Flight Duration (Approx.) | Frequency |
Boston (BOS) | Azores Airlines, TAP Air Portugal | 4h 45m eastbound / 5h 30m westbound | Year-round |
Toronto (YYZ) | Azores Airlines, Air Canada | 5h 30m eastbound / 6h westbound | Year-round |
Montreal (YUL) | Azores Airlines | 5h 45m eastbound / 6h 15m westbound | Seasonal (April–October) |
New York (JFK) | Azores Airlines | 5h 30m eastbound / 6h westbound | Seasonal (May–October) |
Oakland/San Francisco (OAK/SFO) | Azores Airlines | 9h eastbound / 10h westbound | Seasonal (June–September) |
These flights typically operate overnight from North America, arriving in the Azores early in the morning—perfect for starting a day of exploration.

Connecting to Other Islands
Once in Ponta Delgada or Terceira, travelers can easily connect to the other islands via SATA Air Açores, the regional airline of the Azores.
Domestic Connections
Terceira (TER) – 40-minute flight
Faial (HOR) – 50 to 60 minute flight
Pico (PIX) – 50 to 60 minute flight
Santa Maria (SMA) – 30-minute flight
São Jorge (SJZ) – 50-minute flight
Graciosa (GRW) – 1-hour flight
Flores (FLW) – 60 to 90 minute flight

Flights between islands are frequent throughout the year. Reliable ferry services also operate seasonally, offering scenic alternatives for inter-island travel. Direct flights from the islands to mainland Portugal are frequent and only 2 hours long. You can easily fly to Lisbon and connect to the rest of Europe.

New Airlines and Routes Starting June 2026
The Azores’ growing popularity has attracted new carriers expanding their transatlantic networks. These additions will make the Azores even more accessible to Canadian travelers.
Beginning June 2026, the following airlines will launch new routes:
WestJet: Direct flights from Toronto to Ponta Delgada (PDL), operating twice weekly.
Air Canada: Direct flights from Toronto to Ponta Delgada (PDL), operating three times weekly.
I have heard of other possible airlines starting routes to the islands from the US, we will have to keep an eye out.
